Jimi Hendrix

Hendrix playing away...

Hendrix playing away...

Hendrix defined the way the guitar is played today. Before him, most artists (save from Link Wray, Pete Townshend and Dave Davies) tried to avoid distortion, and viewed the guitar in terms of scales and chords that would build up to make a song seem complete. Hendrix completely changed that.

He used his imagination and tried to use the guitar to serve the purpose of the song, which meant that his guitar would have to be distorted in order to do so. His distortion to this is so severe, and his guitar sounds like it is dying, but his playing is so melodious that it takes songs like "Voodoo Child", "The Wind Cries Mary", "Purple Haze" and "All Along The Watchtower" to the nex level in terms of it's playing. Even to this day, no-one has ever been able to copy the distortion used on the Hendrix songs and have been able to top it.

This is the reason why for me, that Hendrix is the most technically gifted player of all time.
